The Trex decking collections

Trex organizes its decking into tiers that differ in finish, color range, board profile and warranty term. They are not five names for the same board.

Trex Signature®

Trex's top tier: a 1-inch square-edge board with an elegant, engineered-hardwood-inspired grain and a curated, nature-inspired color palette.

Trex Transcend® Lineage®

The collection Trex builds its heat-mitigating technology around, with multi-tonal streaking rather than a single flat tone.

Budget-conscious residential decks and smaller platforms.

Which collection fits which project

Trex decking is a surface material. Whether a given collection suits your project depends on the structure underneath it, the span, the fastening method and the manufacturer's installation requirements — not on the collection name alone. These are starting points for a conversation, not approvals.

Residential decks

  • Any current Trex collection can be specified for a residential deck.
  • Framing, span and fastener spacing follow the Trex installation instructions for the board you choose.
  • Collection choice is usually driven by finish, color and warranty term rather than by structure.

Docks and waterfront

  • Trex publishes installation requirements for its boards; whether a specific collection is approved for a dock depends on those requirements and on the supporting structure.
  • We confirm the current manufacturer guidance for your board before we quote a dock in Trex.
  • Where a Trex board is not the right answer over water, page three covers the materials that are.

Pool areas

  • Pool decks are walked barefoot, so surface temperature and color matter more here than anywhere else.
  • Lighter colors and SunComfortable™ colors are the ones worth looking at first.
  • Slip performance depends on the board, the finish and how the surface is kept clean.

High-sun and entertaining areas

  • Transcend Lineage is the collection Trex positions for heat performance.
  • Shade — a pergola, a roof, a sail — changes surface temperature more than any board selection.
  • Darker colors will run hotter. That is true of every manufacturer, not just Trex.

Heat, sun and color selection

Central Florida decks live in full sun. This is what can honestly be said about it.

Trex SunComfortable™ technology

Trex describes SunComfortable™ as heat-mitigating technology engineered to reflect solar energy and reduce heat absorption, keeping the deck surface cooler than its original boards. Trex is explicit about the limit of that claim, and so are we: SunComfortable decking stays cooler than Trex's original boards, but like all decking it will get hot in direct sun on hot days, especially in darker colors. It is offered in specific colors — not across every collection or every color — including Transcend Lineage and select colors added to other tiers, such as Honey Grove in Enhance Naturals and Tide Pool in Enhance Basics. Ask us which currently-available colors carry it.

Color does more than looks

  • Lighter colors generally reach lower surface temperatures than darker colors in the same conditions.
  • Shade structures, pergolas and covered areas change surface temperature more than any board choice does.
  • Surface temperature depends on sun angle, air temperature, wind, humidity and time of day — not on the product alone.
  • No manufacturer, Trex included, publishes a temperature you can count on for your specific deck.

About heat and direct sunlight

No decking material stays cold in direct sunlight. Every outdoor decking surface — wood, composite, PVC or mineral-based — can become hot in the sun. Certain collections, colors and technologies are designed to help reduce heat accumulation, or to reach lower surface temperatures than darker or traditional boards under comparable conditions. Lighter colors generally reach lower surface temperatures than darker ones. Take care with bare feet, children and pets on any deck on a hot day.
